Overselling is obviously a fact of life with shared servers. I would argue, however, that Hostway, for the price they charge for their hosting services, doesn’t do as good a job as they should at managing the overselling of their servers.
In the past year, a site I have with them has twice run out of space WELL short of the allotment they claim I have available.
Fortunately there is the handy df command, and Hostway allows SSH access.
Here is the latest summary:
$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 989M 80M 859M 9% /
/dev/sda2 251M 15M 224M 6% /boot
/dev/sda7 259G 245G 401M 100% /home
/dev/sda5 3.9G 378M 3.3G 11% /usr
/dev/sda6 3.9G 1.3G 2.5G 34% /var
Currently my site is using 1GB of it’s “limit” of 20GB of space! Obviously gonna be a problem since the home directory currently has only 400 MB of space left on it.
Joyent’s Accerators are looking better and better each day.
