Subconscious Reference to 9/11 (pt. 3)

These are a sequence of design drafts I made in October 2001, while I was working on an ad for the David Bohnett Foundation. I started with the design on the left, and progressed to the next two during the design process.

At the time, I though I was just making a nice composition of abstract shapes. Shortly after working on these I realized that the ads were obviously reflecting the imagery I saw on 9/11, and I scrapped the design concept. Looking back, it amazes me how closely these images reflect the images I saw on television — the iconic images that are so familiar to all of us.

I have always been curious if this type of imagery subconsciously worked itself into the work of other designers and artists.
