Modern Invention

Recently, historians have proposed an alternate theory. They claim that the knitting style is a recent invention dating to the 1930s. Noted knitting historian, Alice Starmore, presents very convincing evidence that the sweater is not a practical sweater for fishermen and it was not worn by them. Instead the sweater was developed strictly as a beautiful piece of knitting to be sold to people on the mainland.

Though it may be dissapointing to find that the sweater has no deep mystical ancient Celtic roots and was not worn by Irish fishermen in the rough seas, I think it is exciting to think that even in the modern industrial era, a brand new exciting knitting style was developed.
