This was a collaborative project between me and another student named Jeff Williams. This was for a drawing class. Jeff was fascinated by a leaking water faucet on the ceiling of one of the drawing studios. We worked together to make an installation that drew attention to the water drops falling from the ceiling.
First, we put a plastic cup with a balloon stretched over it so that the water drops fell on a trampoline.
Then we rigged a tube so it captured the sound of the falling drop and set up a microphone to amplify that sound as it exited the tube.
For the drawing portion of the piece, we placed a small drop of ink in the center of a piece of paper and then let that paper sit in the drop for progressively longer periods of time. As far as I remember, each successive piece of paper was held in the drops for one drop more than the previous paper.
We then put a piece of paper in the drops until the water bore a hold through the center and this was the final drawing in the sequence. Unfortunately, in art school, we didn’t do many collaborations, but what I learned from this drawing was that it was incredibly fun to work alongside another student. I think we both benefitted from bouncing ideas off of each other.
